A Broadway actor is recruited by an elite counter-terrorism organization to use his acting skills to infiltrate a dangerous terrorist cell. Chaos and collateral damage ensue as Team America fights terrorism at all costs, even if it leads to a bummer remix of their theme song.

Team America: World Police is a satirical musical comedy from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It takes aim at the US's nationalistic response to the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, the US's outsized role in world politics, and the ineffectual protestations of Hollywood liberals. The over-the-top comedy is heightened by the film's animation style, which uses marionettes and scale models in a parody of the 1960s British TV series Thunderbirds, which was itself about an elite team of international do-gooders.

Some of Parker and Stone's irreverent "we offend everyone equally" style of humor has surely not aged well in the twenty years since the film's release (viewers should brace themselves for an extra-large helping early-2000s-style casual homophobia), but there is still no denying the South Park boys' talent for clever satire and catchy musical numbers.

On November 5th, 2024, as the whole world watches the US presidential election and wonders what the results will mean for them, Tromsø Filmklubb invites you to spend a few hours reveling in the absurdity of it all.

Trivia: Director of Photography Bill Pope filmed Team America after filming The Matrix: Reloaded, The Matrix: Revolutions, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. He was reportedly looking for "something completely different" after doing so much work with green screens and CGI in those films.
